Remembering our Roots

Did you know that Alice Lee, the sister to famed Pulitzer Prize winning author of “To Kill A Mockingbird” Harper Lee, was one of the first female graduates of Birmingham School of Law?  Raised in Monvoeville Alabama, her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, a simple country attorney, was Harper’s model for Atticus Finch and was the one who asked Alice to become an attorney after the death of his law partner.  She graduated on May 21, 1943 and passed the Alabama State Bar Exam to join the firm of Bugg, Barnett & Lee, where she worked until she was 100 years old!     She passed at the age of 103 on November 17, 2014.
