BSOL Alumni, Brian Smith, Recognized as a Rising Star!

Birmingham School of Law alumnus Brian Smith has been selected a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2017. An attorney at Wettermark Keith, LLC, Smith specializes in Social Security disability and manages that department for the firm.

Every year, Super Lawyers selects attorneys from all firm sizes and more than 70 practice areas throughout the United States. Candidates are nominated by a peer who has personally observed the nominee in action. Rising Star candidates must be either 40 years of age or younger or in practice for 10 years or less.

Smith attended BSL from 2009 to 2012 while working with Social Security disability from 2007 – 2011. “I was in Professor DeGaris’ Constitutional Law class and sat by Tyler Mann who was with Wettermark Keith at the time. He encouraged me to apply with Wettermark Keith, and I did. They hired me as a case manager, and I worked in that position until I passed the bar,” he says. Smith gets referrals from all over the state and has had more than 800 Social Security disability hearings throughout the mid-South region.

“I am honored to receive this recognition because I enjoy what I do and like working on behalf of my disability clients. I feel like it takes a certain type of compassion to serve these clients, and I am honored that someone nominated me,” Smith says. “BSL enabled me to pursue the career I loved and prepared me for my position at Wettermark Keith. I am proud I chose BSL for my legal education.”
