BSL Alumni, Joe May, Kicks off Campaign to Become Bessemer Mayor

Bessemer, Alabama – Local educator and entrepreneur, Joe May, kicks off his campaign for the Mayor’s seat in Bessemer today. May was raised in the Bessemer area and has served the community in various capacities throughout the years. “My experience mentoring kids at Jess Lanier High School inspired me to do more,” said May, “I saw so much promise and potential in our children, and I wanted to help them maximize their potential to further their personal growth and development” To that end, May started a non-profit organization helping urban society to live empowered.

Raised by an educator and an attorney who both share a passion for social activism, Joe was introduced to public service at a very young age. “Watching my mother’s love for education and my father’s leadership and passion for advocacy, helped shaped my future and worldview,” said May. Following in his mother’s footsteps, Joe currently works as an educator in the Birmingham City School System teaching history, government, and economics.

Joe, began his college education at Alabama A&M University, but after being lead by a greater passion to serve the community he enrolled and graduated from Southeastern Bible College. He went on to serve in a variety of ministerial roles and positions over the years. Joe also received his law degree from Birmingham School of Law.

In his campaign for Mayor, Joe plans to focus on making Bessemer a better place to live, learn, work, and grow. “I love the City of Bessemer. It lives at the very core of who I am. Bessemer is largely responsible for making me the person I am today. “I want to help make Bessemer better by creating safer neighborhoods for our families, better schools for our children and better employment opportunities for our citizens. I want to give back to Bessemer what it gave to me. I want to make Bessemer better, now.”
